Post New early morning clinics by Rob Little
Rob Little has scheduled more ice time, to keep his early morning clinics going through the end of June. Many JMSers, including myself, feel that Rob is one of the best coaches around. These early morning clinics are good deals when you consider the amount of individual help you get at them, as there's only been about 3-4 people at most of the sessions (I went to both sessions this week and there was only 1 other person at each session). Also, Rob has often stayed on the ice with us until 7:15 or 7:20.

Message from Rob Little:

Rob Little Hockey is excited to announce our new small-group, skill development sessions designed for adult hockey players. Sessions will be offered selected weekday mornings from 6:15-7:00 AM at the Breck Anderson Arena. This program is for players who want to supplement in-season play with individual skill assessment and development. Players may select dates that fit their schedule.

Rob Little Hockey will offer Skating Skills, Speed and Agility Skating and Shooting/Stickhandling Skills sessions.

The Skating Skills sessions will be limited to 10 skaters per session. The focus will be assessing and developing skating skills and techniques for each player. Areas of instruction/practice could include:
- skating posture and balance
-skating power and efficiency
- edge control
- agility
- forward skating
- backward skating
- crossovers
- transitions
- hockey turns
- stopping

The Speed and Agility Skating is an over-speed training session. This is not an instructional session but is designed for players to develop a faster pace to their skating. All drills are done at an "uncomfortably fast"pace. Players may choose whether they want to carry a puck, or not , when training. This session will be a great workout in addition to developing your speed and agility.

The Shooting/Stickhandling Skills sessions will be limited to a maximum of 8 skaters per session. Assessment and skill development of each participant's shooting and puck-control skills will be the focus. Approximately half of each session will be devoted to shooting and half to stickhandling. Areas of instruction for the Shooting /Stickhandling sessions could include:
- wrist shot
- slap shot
- snap shot
- backhand shot
- one-timers
- accuracy and power
- breakaway goalie dekes
- forward and backward puckhandling
- single fakes with edge work
- double fakes with edge work
- toe drags
- attacking the triangle
- puck protection
- breakaway goalie dekes

The cost of each session is 30.00 and should be paid in cash at the session. No cancellations and no-shows will still be charged.

There are multiple showers available at Breck Anderson Arena for your use.

The rink doors open at 6:00 AM.

Here is the upcoming schedule:

Monday 4/13 Speed and Agility Skating
Wednesday 4/15 Shooting/Stickhandling Session

I'm going this Thursday (June 4), anybody else with me? Sue Gibson and Chris Haack and I were there last week, it was SUPER.

Come. Try. Learn.

I sent Rob an email this morning to see if I could sign up for Thursday's session, sounds pretty beneficial.

I really encourage everyone to try to attend some of Rob's morning sessions. Considering the cash I've spent with JMS, forking $30 to Rob in retrospect was a no brainer considering how much I learned. Prior to spending time with Rob, I knew I was doing something wrong with my skating but didn't know exactly what or how to fix it. Like anything in life, you don't know what you don't know. Now I know. It's the simple tweaks he makes to your game as a objective expert that sends you to the next level. And stating the obvious, the better you can skate (In one 60 minute session with Rob, I can now do backward crossovers -- well sort of!) and handle the puck, the more fun you'll have and feel better about yourself in a game. He is an amazing coach.

When I first hit the ice with Barb and Sue last week, I felt a bit intimidated. That was my own lack of self-confidence since I knew they had years more experience than me. That quickly passed though as everyone made me feel right at home and we supported each other. Yeah, you're gonna fall, but you're not pushing yourself if you don't. I left Rob's session with a permagrin that lasted all day. How's that for $30?

AWESOME stickhandling/shooting drills this morning. I think I really got the toe drag snap shot thing--what a moment of Zen when you just FEEL it work right!

And of course, the joy is accentuated with that BOOM! as the puck hits the boards and the sound reverberated through the arena. Nice.

I'll be at next Thursday's am clinic, I hope some of you can join us.

Rob's coaching is nothing short of genius, and the way he explains things makes it all so CLEAR. Once you come, not only will you be thrilled at all you learned--how it all makes SENSE--but you will want to bring all your friends, too. I'm not making this up.

Come try a morning clinic. You will be amazed at how easy Rob makes learning--and you will be amazed at what you can do after just a short time under his instructive guidance.

Yes, the stick handling/shooting clinic this morning was really useful. Thanks to Rob's insights, I'm starting to figure out some of the things I've been doing wrong. It's a little frustrating to realize I've been practicing things incorrectly, but at least now I can start to practice doing them in a better way. I wish I'd gotten this instruction on day one, but much better late than never. Hopefully I'll eventually be able to shoot and skate at the same time. Otherwise, I'll need to see if I can get people to treat my hockey shots like golf shots: "Quiet! Nobody make any distracting movements. She's getting ready to shoot... She's studying the lay of the ice and the position of the goalie... Lining up her shot and shuffling her feet into position.... OH!!! One of the defenders got in her way before she could get her shot off! Unbelievably bad form, what was he thinking? You just can't distract someone like that when they're trying to shoot!" (Yeah right, don't you wish?).

I dragged myself out of bed this morning to attend the 6:15am Stick Handling/Shooting clinic of Rob Little. Why? The biggest reason of many – Barb. She has mentioned sees some of us “newbies” ingraining some pretty bad habits. Well that’s all I need. I made that mistake with golf! It IS hard to break a bad habit!

Enough on why I got up at 5AM this morning. The important thing is if I got anything out of it, and boy did I! It was everything from the arm positioning to the toe drag that will improve my game. I'm totally pumped. Did I mention how early I got up for this thing? Anyway, it was worth it!

One last thing – watch out for Barb if she’s out there! Her puck doesn’t always just hit the boards with a boom - just ask my arm! But hey, she definitely gets that puck airborne! posting.php?mode=reply&f=9&t=498#

Definitely worth it. I just started playing hockey this winter and I've never had any actual coaching, so this morning's session with Rob was a revelation. He skates around to everyone, giving you positive, personalized feedback that shows instant results. I'd recommend this to anyone who wants to work on their game. Despite it being so horribly early in the morning.
