| Just My Speed: Adult Beginner Hockey |
These scrimmages are designed for adult beginners. Women and men skate together in the two sessions. JMS has no referees and is no-check.
Players anxious for more ice time can compete against others at their own skill level, directly impacting the flow of the game. Level 1 is for adults who have never skated or who have just recently started to play hockey. This corresponds to the AHA's beginner school or WHAM C3. This session is a safe place for people who have never played hockey to join others at their own skill level. Level 2 is for skaters who are a bit more experienced than raw beginners but are not yet 100% steady on their skates. These skaters can usually turn and sometimes stop, but perhaps not consistently. They are beginning to skate backwards but are not yet completely proficient at it. Level 2 corresponds to an AHA D2 team or a WHAM C2 team. Level 3 skaters have mastered basic hockey skills and can make simple plays, understand rudimentary positioning and are able to skate backwards with proficiency. These players should also be able to do forward crossovers and lift the puck. This level corresponds to WHAM C1 and the AHA's D1 level. Level 4 players have been playing a lot of hockey for at least three years and can break out passes, execute power turns, carry the puck at high speeds through traffic and shoot and pass with reasonable accuracy. Skaters from WHAM B2 and the AHA's C2 tier will fit in with this group. Level 5 is for AHA's faster C1 skaters and above. To ensure this level is competitive, Level 5 participation is by invitation only. Almost all of these skaters will have played high school hockey and/or have been playing for ten years or more. Ice times are 90 minutes. We skate at arenas in the Twin Cities metro area, usually St. Louis Park and Richfield. Cost is $15 for one session or five sessions for $60. Loaner gear is available for skaters and netminders. |
